Reading Schemes

At St. Wilfrid’s, we use a range of Reading Schemes to support children with learning to read and developing their enjoyment and understanding of books. We use the ‘Letters and Sounds’ Scheme to teach phonics and this is taught in phases. In Key Stage 2, children begin to be taught specific grammar, punctuation and spelling techniques. Reading from Reception to Y2 is carried out in school and supported with the Oxford Reading Tree, PM books, Floppy’s Phonics and other readers. We have reading morning every morning from 9-9.15 and volunteers come into classes to read with the children and support with reading tasks and games. In KS2, children take reading books home regularly. We encourage all children to read throughout the school day and at home with members of their family.
