Intent
At St Wilfrid’s Catholic Primary, we value Art and Design as it provides pupils with a unique way of perceiving themselves. It broadens the range of opportunities we give children to express their creativity.
Skills that the children develop through Art and Design are continuously revised from foundation stage through to year six and the children are given the opportunity to revisit skills they have previously learned before learning new ones.
The children at St Wilfrid’s are given opportunity not only in art lessons, but across the curriculum to utilize their drawing skills.
Each child is given their own unique sketchbook where they can explore ideas, be inventive and take risks.
Self- evaluation of work in Art and Design is encouraged and children can engage within in- depth discussions about their own and others artwork to develop a sense of their own personal style.
Aims
The national curriculum for art and design aims to ensure that all pupils:
1. Produce creative work, exploring their ideas and recording their experiences
2. Become proficient in drawing, painting, sculpture and other art, craft and design
techniques
3. Evaluate and analyse creative works using the language of art, craft and design
4. Know about great artists, craft makers and designers, and understand the historical
and cultural development of their art forms.
Implementation
Our whole school curriculum provides children with opportunities to develop their skills in art using a range of media and materials. Children have the opportunity to explore and evaluate different creative ideas developing skills in drawing, painting and 3D work.
Learning through and about the art enriches the experience of being at school as well as preparing our children for life after St Wilfrid’s. Art encourages self-expression and creativity and can build confidence as well as a sense of individual identity. We educate our children in all aspects of art, including art history, as well as the practical skills of creative expression such as painting, drawing, sculpturing, photography, pottery and textiles.
